Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Riding Mower, foot clutch, riding lawnmower

Question

The differential is fine. Wheels turn with no problem. The foot lever and the lever to lower the deck both kill the engine immediately. It takes about three seconds for the engine to putter completely out. It just seems electrical, doesn't it? Thanks for all your help. Even looking in the manual, I just don't see a switch referenced. Sorry If i am being a pain but with over an acre to mow I am tired of using the push mower!

Thanks

Well, I spent a couple of hours trying to figure this thing out. there is no obstruction, the blades rotate, etc. It is when I let off the foot clutch or I can take the clutch hand lever to lower the deck and jiggle it about two inches and it dies. The two seem directly related. I checked the switch under the seat and it works fine. the problem is after tracing the wires and reading the manual, I did not see any sign of a clutch safety switch. If you have any other ideas, I appreciate it.

Hello,

All of a sudden when I start my Sears riding lawnmower and let out the clutch, the engine dies. I can sit with the clutch in all day long and it keeps running. Just as soon as I let it out it stops, even when in neutral. Fuel filter is not clogged. Help, I ran out of ideas.

Thanks

Hi Kevin,

If the engine stalls as if it is under a heavy load, I would suspect that something is binding or frozen.  Isolate the deck from the engine, by removing the belt.  Check each blade and its spindle for free turning.  If the deck checks out okay then there might be a problem with the belt or pulley.  Trace the drive systen from the deck back to the engine.
If the engine dies as if the key was turned off, then there might be a problem with a safety switch, located at the clutch or in the seat.

Let me know how you make out.

While reading my first reply I noticed I mentioned the deck.  I must have still been sleepy and thinking about the blade drive instead of the mower drive.
If the engine stalls when you release the foot control for the mower drive, even in neutral, then I would check the differential.  It may be locked up.  Remove the belt that goes to it and try again.  If it still stalls, I would look at the deck lever again.  There should be a safety switch attached to it.
Does the engine die abruptly or continue to turn over a little, as it does when the key is shut off?

Answer
Hi Kevin,

No problem and no pain.
It does seem electrical still.  I can't point you to a switch though.  I don't remember exactly where they are but search around the lever and pedal and trace wires to see where they lead to.
The hand lever usually controls only lowering the deck onto its wheels and then engages the blades.  The foot pedal engages the mower wheel drive.  Both should only be tied together with an electrical safety switch.  Have you tested/bypassed the seat switch while the engine stalls?
