Michael,
I tried spraying starter fluid into the intake of the carburetor as you suggested and the engine stays running with the choke in as long as I keep spraying. What would you suggest?

Thank You
Rick

I have a Simplicity riding lawnmower with a B&S engine. Last week while mowing the engine started running rough and wanting to cut off. I found that if I pulled the choke all the way out the engine would run smoothly but not have quite the horsepower. I found my fuel filter partially clogged and replaced it. Still no luck. I inspected both spark plugs and found one to be dirty. I cleaned it and still no joy. I inspected the air filter and it was clean. With the cover off to the carburetor and engine running I could place my hand over the intake and with the choke pushed in the engine would try to stay running. It would suck then release the palm of my hand. It would not be steady sucking. Any thoughts?

Hi Rick,

Since it runs better with the choke on, I suspect a lack of fuel flow to the engine.  Test this by squirting fuel or starting fluid into the carb intake.  Does it straighten out? There should be a constant vacuum at the intake.  If not, there may be a valve problem but lets start with the carb.

Let me know what you find.

Answer
Hi Rick,

Seems like a fuel flow problem. The carb most likely has dirt, debris, gummed fuel or water inside.  You will need to remove the carb, disassemble it, clean all the small internal openings and blow it out with compressed air.   Probe each and every hole with a small wire.  Adding a carb rebuild kit wouldn't hurt either.

Let me know how you make out.
