Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Old Toro Riding Mower, briggs and stratton, orange wire

Question
I have an old Toro model#57360 briggs and stratton 11hp riding mower. The i think they call it the PTO switch or mower deck switch that engages the blade. The wiring harness to this switch one of the couplings has melted there are two one has a blue and red wire this is the one that melted the other is a yellow and orange wire. Is there a way to bypass this switch so the blades will be engaged all the time. Right now the blades won't engage at all and i am just sitting watching my grass grow. Any help would be appreciated.

Answer
Hi Bruce,

You might be able to connect the wires together permenently, but due to a safety issue, the system usually prevents starting with the blades engaged. Other solenoids or switches require the blage PTO to be activated after the engine is running and with the operator on the seat.  If just the connector has failed, you could re-attach new connectors and attach them to the switch.  If the switch has failed, I would replace it with any generic switch.  To get your grass mowed right now, you could start the engine, then twist the wires together to engage the blades.

Let me know how you make out.
