Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): mc coullough trimmer, rope 1, plug hole

Question
I have an silver eagle that is not getting any spark to the plug. I checked the resistance and both contacts have no resistance to the plug or body. I am trying to remove the clutch and have removed the screw that goes to the clutch cover  on but how do I remove the clutch. How do I keep the motor from turning and is there somthing I'm not doing.

Answer
To stop the engine from turning, you need to get a stopper plug that threads into the spark plug hole.  Another way, but you must be careful not get any down the cylinder ports (intake, exhaust, transfer), is to use small diameter rope (1/4") fed into the spark plug hole with a tail hanging out for retreival.  Then as you turn the engine, the piston will come up against the rope at the top of its stroke and lock the engine.

If this engine has points and condensor, replace them and have a shop check the coil for you.  If it is electronic ignition, disconnect the shut-off switch and check for spark.  If you have spark, the switch is faulty.  If you have no spark, the ignition module is at fault.  Hope this helps.
