Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Small engine repair-lawnmower, bucket of bolts, starter rope

Question
I have a Sears model number 917.373980,22", 5.5 hp self propelled rotary lawn mower. When last running, the engine was very noisy, sounding like a bucket of bolts. I stopped for a break, and it would not restart. There was kick-back on the pull starter rope, and a puff of black smoke from the filter. Thanks

Answer
Sounds like the flywheel key is sheared.  The noise is likely the blade hub is loose or the key is sheared.  This would also shear the flywheel key.  If you have to replace the flywheel key, make sure you inspect the blade hub or it will just shear the flywheel key again.  Hope this helps.
