Hi, i was wondering if you can help me out with my problem. I have a craftsman lawn tarctor (model number 917.270810) that was bought back in 1998. It has a B&S 19.5 HP engine model number 42E707. I have never done any kind of repairs to it, only the maintenance, i.e., change oil, spark plugs, air and fuel filter. Last week i was using it to cut my lawn and it was working great as it always did. I went to cut my lawn this week and the lawn tractor kept idleling (sp?) up and down. I figured it might be the fuel filter and replaced it, no help. I changed the oil, spark plugs, took the fuel tank off and cleaned it and filled it up with fresh gas, still kept doing the same thing. Today i pulled the carburetor off, took it apart and cleaned it with carb cleaner. I assembled it all and re-installed it and it is doing the same thing. I'm needing some help with my problem as i really can't afford a Sears Service center bill right this moment. Please give me some advice, Thanks.

Did you check the intake manifold gaskets?  Sometimes they leak.

Most surging is caused by the carburetor.  Did you use compressed air to clean the carb?
Let me know.

No...i did not check the intake manifold gasket, i will do that, hopefully tomorrow after work. What am i looking for? I do not have a compressor, therefore i just used spray carb cleaner and used my mouth to blow as much air as i can to it. I know it's kind of weird, but i used what i had available to me. I also did not probe any of the little holes with a tip cleaner or anything, i am leaning strongly to take the carb off and re-do this procedure. I would also like to get a carb kit for this carburetor, but calling my local sears was no help, 5-7 buisness days before they can have it to me. The grass is about 6-8 inches high and it seems that i am out of luck for the time being.

Do i have to let the dissasembled carb sit awhile in the carb cleaner or did the spray cleaner i used enough?

I did notice it had brownish goo and little black debris on the bottom side of the float, gathered near the little hole where the fuel enters the chamber, i used the straw and shot it through that hole for a bit and sprayed the rest. I am new to this so i wasn't too sure how exactly to clean a carb. Please advise....

Answer
Try a local Briggs dealer for the carb kit.  For light debris the spray cleaner works fine but it you actually saw debris it the carb then you really should use an air compressor to clean the carb.

Do you have a friend who might have an air compressor?
Let me know.
