Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): lawnmower, internal passages, seasonal equipment

Question
I just scored a lawnmower at a garage sale, $20 and it worked, but now it doesnt.  Its an Eagle, from Sears, looks old, but pretty well kept up.  I replaced the spark plug, it starts but then soon dies with a smell of gas.  Ive never taken an engine apart, but am ready.  Im just not sure where to start.  I think something is dirty, a carb maybe, fuel filter....does it have a fuel filter?  The air filter is dirty, I took that off and it still wont run.  What should I do or where should I start.  I love working on stuff like this, but am sort of clueless.
any suggestions are helpful!
thanks,
Linda

Answer
I suspect the carb needs to be cleaned thoroughly, which includes pushing a piece of tag wire through all of the internal passages and following up with aerosol carb cleaner.  Because most people don't properly store seasonal equipment, it's very common for the carb to be gummed up with old fuel.  Let there and let me know if the problem still exists.  Hope this helps.
