Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Carb issues., gasoline engine, middle of the ocean

Question
I am in the navy and out in the middle of the ocean.  I have an gasoline engine that runs a pressure washer.  The thing wont run unless you choke it out or put the choke in and cover most of the air intake with yor hand so that it is getting enough suction to pull the gas through it.  I took the carb apart and blew air through everything to clean it out as I have no carb cleaner.  The float is not stuck and it never sat with old gas in it, it just stopped working properly.  I put the thing back together and resealed it.  The fuel filter is not clogged, nor is the fuel pump broken.  It all works up to the point it goes in the carb.  I can jerry rig it to work, but would rather it operated properly.  Any other suggestions as to what might be going wrong?  Thank you for your time, effort, and support.
Sincerely
Justin

Answer
Hi Justin,

If, when you cover the intake and feel good suction, then a leaking intake valve or poor compression is ruled out.  I'm sure you have also tried re-setting the jets.
By the engine running only with the choke on, that points to a lack of fuel flow through the carb.  You are on the right track but need to re-check the carb.  I have had to re-do a carb several times, only to find one small hole that was plugged.  Use a small wire to probe with.  I have also thought I had disassembled a carb fully but to find another part that came off, to reveal clogged ports.

Let me know how you make out.
