Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): My McCulloch trimmer engine wont start!, scooter project, gas scooter

Hi,

Last August (2003), I bought a used McCulloch trimmer engine for a gas scooter project. It ran fine when I bought it, but after a few months of sitting (I can't remember if it had gas in it or not during those months), it doesn't want to start. In desperation, I hooked my drill up to the driveshaft, spun it, but it still wouldn't turn over. I cleaned out the carb, but I may have the fuel lines installed wrong. After a few pushes of the primer bulb, the fuel collects in the carb, between the choke and the throttle. Also, I took the carb off and looked inside. After a few turns of the drive shaft, it looks like the piston is blocking the carb opening.  It has a spark and good compression, but simply wont turn over.

Hi Trevor,

2 stroke trimmer engines are very troublesome.

The problem is most likely a lack of fuel flow to the engine.  You can test this by squirting a little fuel or starting fluid into the carb and trying to start it.  If it runs for a little bit the you will need to rebuild the carb.  Getting a carb kit may be difficult.  In tha case you could try cleaning the carb, getting all the small openings inside.

Let me know how you make out.

I believe my problem is all too simple. I don't think the flywheel is turning with enough RPMs to create a spark, or at least a hot enough one. I'll have to devise some sort of starter (electric motor, perhaps?). Do you think, or know, if it's possible to start an engine with a gas grill ignition?

Thanks for you help (and time!!)

Answer
Hi Trevor,

Ah, here's the original question and answer.

If you have good compression and hot spark and fuel, the engine should pop.  The flywheel does need to turn fast to make a good spark.  Doesn't it have a recoil rope?
A grill ignition would not work because the spark needs to be timed precisely.  Maybe it was flooded.  Dry everything out and try again.
