Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Evinrude 6 HP Outboard, hi mike, debris

Question
I have a late 70's Evinrude 6 hp outboard that I am trying to get running.  I am able to start the engine and it will run for 5 - 10 seconds and then it sputters and dies.  It seems to be drawing fuel (which is fresh and clean) and it is getting all of the way to the carb.  It has new plugs in it as well.  Any ideas?

Answer
Hi Mike,

Even though fuel is getting to the carb, I suspect it is not getting to the engine sufficiantly to run well.
Try to start it or keep it running while squirting fuel or starting fluid into the carb intake.  If it starts, then the carb most likely has dirt, debris, gummed fuel or water inside.  You will need to remove the carb, disassemble it, clean all the small internal openings and blow it out with compressed air.  Probe each and every hole with a small wire.  Adding a carb rebuild kit wouldn't hurt either.

Let me know how you make out.
Michael
