Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Lawnmower problems, recoil, sears

We have a craftsman 6.0hp gas mower and the pull cord will not move an inch when we try to start the mower.  The blade moves (not freely) if we try to move it by hand but the pull cord won't budge.  I was wondering how to fix it or if the engine was seized.  It worked fine 2 days ago and is full of oil and gas and then all of a sudden it just won't work?  Help, its only 1.5 years old and sears will not help me.

Hi Jennifer,

I suspect a jammed recoil rope.  You will need to remove the recoil assembly.  Usually 4 bolts.  Inspect the rope and reel to see if it is stuck.  Try to free it.  Let me know how you make out.  If the rope is broken or there is another problem we can proceed from there.
