I have an 8 year old Craftsman rideing mower 19HP Briggs & Stratton engine. For a few years it has surged a little when running. The past year I have had to apply more and more choke to make it run. Now the choke is closed almost completely when running. If not it will die. The air filter is clean & the gas filter is new. I have ran the air mixture screw in & out. No change or very little change. Now it is starting to loose power and start hard. Is this a carb problem & what might be the solution. Thanks

More than likely it's a carb problem.  I would also check the fuel pump lines and valve breather.

Is your engine a V twin or opposed twin cylinder engine?
Let me know.

Answer
Most of those engines have the fuel pump built into the carburetor.  So, the problem is most likely in the carb.  The carb is actually very simple to remove and clean.  Pay attention to the fuel pump springs, diaphragm and gasket.

The diaphragm and gasket stick together when you remove them, just make sure you put them in correctly when re-assembling the carb.

I would recommend cleaning the carb with carb cleaner and compressed air.  Also, check both intake gaskets.  It's also easy to get to the valve breather with the carb removed.  You can clean it with carb cleaner and compressed air.

Let me know what happens.
