Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): my lawn mower will not stay cranked, big wheel, bolt

Question
I have a 5hp Murray big wheel mower and this is my problem ,I push the gas primer about 5 times and pull the cord to start my mower and it starts but after a few seconds it shuts off. I do not have a breather cover on the engine.I took the bolt out of the bowl and let it drain but still will not stay started. What problem may I have? Since the original breather cover was damaged i do not have it on covering the carb. at all. The carb is on the right side front of engine. Please try to help me out.

Answer
Hi Paul,

You most likely have dirt, debris or gummed fuel in the carb.  You will need to remove, disassemble and clean the carb with carb cleaner.  Use a small wire to probe each and every small opening.  Finally, blow it out with compressed air and re-assemble.

Let me know how you make out.
