Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): PWC 2-stroke carb settings, yamaha waverunner, acceleration range

Question
I have a 1992 Yamaha Waverunner that is a 500cc 2-stroke. I am unsure of the proper settings for the high and low idle. I did find an article explaining the function of each and I learned a little about the high idle, which controls the 30-100% acceleration range and the amount of oil mixed in with the gas, but it didn't give specifics on correct adjustment. I assume this is due to all engines even of the same type or size not being exactly the same. I realize I will probably just have to use the ol' trial and error approach until I can reach the best adjustment. So far I either can get it to idle wonderfully with no mid to top ranges, or have the mid range and idle ok with no top, or all top with no mid and no idle. This is where you come in. I'm hoping maybe you could tell me what they are or suggest ideas to simplify and or solve this dilema. Thank you so much for your time and advice.

Sincerely,
David Maxwell

Answer
As a general rule of thumb, mixture adjustment screws start at about 1 1/2 turns out from lightly seated.  I would recommend, in your case, to take it to a Yamaha service dealer for carb adjustment.  I recommend this because if there is another issue besides carb adjustment, it would be money well spent to have it diagnosed properly instead of being stuck out in the middle of nowhere without a paddle.  Hope this helps.
