Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): I need my grass cut, vacation tomorrow, fuel flow

Question
I got a yard machine with a craftsman motor and when I first purchased it. It was running good for about 3 cuts. But now it will crank but when you engage the deck, it starts and then loses power and will stop pulling. When I put the deck back out of engaged the mower will then run fine for a while. I then engage it once again and it continues to do the same thing. I charged the battery and checked the belts. I discovered one has a chunk missing and needs to be replaced.  I think that it may have to do with the pulley, but I am not to sure on this. So what do you think? Please help me to get my grass cut.

Answer
Hi Lewis,

I suspect either a lack of fuel flow to the engine or a bound bearing on the deck, is the cause of power loss.
Check for free turning of the blade spindles and pulleys.  Then check the air filter and try adjusting the carb.  The carb float may need adjusting or replacement.  As far as the belt, I would replace it, if it is faulty.

Unfortunately, I will be on vacation tomorrow so you may have to continue with another volunteer.

Good Luck,
Michael
