Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Lawn Mower Engine Dies, fuel tank cap, butterfly valve

Question
Thanks for the reply! I have already done as you suggest. The problem persists. I have attepmted to run with gas cap off, even tried a cap from another piece of equipment. Also, when I cleaned the carb, I pushed a wire through every opening in the carb. It seems to me that the carb is in good working order. I have also checked the priming bulb assembly. There are no holes and the unit appears to be in good shape. I don't know what else to try. Any other suggestions?

Thanks!

I have a Yard Machine push mower with a 6HP quantum engine. Engine starts, then dies after about 10 seconds. I have put in new spark plug, new gas and I have completely and thoroughly cleaned the carburator. I have checked the float and needle valve and both are in goon shape. Upon observation, the throttle body appears to be opening and closing the butterfly valve to keep the engine running, but fails. What can I check next?

First, try loosening off the fuel tank cap and running the engine.  If it continues to run, the tank vent in the cap is plugged (clean or replace the cap).  If this has no effect, there is still a blockage inside the carb.  Make sure you have pushed a piece of tag wire through every passage inside the carb.  Hope this helps.

Answer
If you are telling me there is no issue with the fuel system, it's possible the issue is related to compression (burnt valve or excessive tappet clearance) that affects the engine once it warms up a bit. If compression is the issue, you should hear a whisping noise through the exhaust when you try to start it after it has quit. Otherwise, the trouble could be related to the ignition module becoming inoperative once it gets warmed up. If this is the problem, you need to check for spark immediately after it quits. Hope this helps.
