Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): small engine trouble, riding mower, engine trouble

Question
I just received a riding mower (probably 3-4 years old) that has been sitting in a garage for 2 years.  It had a little fuel in it.  I added fresh fuel.  When I was running the engine, gas was coming (pouring) out the muffler.  Never seen that before.  Could this be related to the air filter, which needs replacement?

Answer
Hi Alan,

I have never seen that before either.  I would think fuel would ignite if it passed through the muffler.  If you are sure that it's fuel and not water, then the carb float may be fuel logged and not shuting off as needed.  The air filter should not cause the condition that you describe.

Let me know what you  find.
