Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Carburetor repair/cleaning, lawn mower repair, screw out

Question
Hi.
I am trying to get a Murray riding mower running again. I have replaced the fuel line, spark plug, ignition switch, battery, etc. I have the engine running, but only in the choke position. As soon as I move the throttle switch it dies. I went to the local lawn mower repair shop, they gave me a carburetor kit and suggested I clean the carb out thouroughly. I have done all of that. The only problem I encountered was I could not get the inner screw out of the carb once I had the bowl and float removed. I left it in and replaced the other parts. I sprayed the carb well with carb cleaner, reattached it to the mower and experienced the same problem. Any ideas?
Thank you greatly.

Answer
Hi Davina,

You are on the right track.  An engine that only runs with the choke on, indicates a lack of fuel flow to the engine.  The most common cause is dirt, debris or gummed fuel in the carb.  Internal cleaning and a carb kit is the remedy but each and every small opening must be clean.  Re-clean the carb and get that screw out.  I have had to re-do a carb several times, due to missing just one small hole.

Let me know how you make out.
