Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Rider Lawnmower Runs then Dies, craftsman lt2000, gravity fed

I have a one year old Craftsman LT2000 rider mower with a Kohler Pro engine.  This spring I changed the oil, oil filter, and fuel filter as suggested by the manual.  Now the mower starts and runs for a few minutes then dies.  I have discovered that it is apparently dying when the fuel filter empties out of fuel (the new fuel filter is clear plastic). Fuel looks like it is leaving to feed the carb, but fuel is not coming in or not coming in fast enough to keep the filter full.
I have tried running it with the gas cap removed, but it acts the same, so I don't think that is the problem.  Once the engine stops, I need to unclip the filter and fuel line from the side of the engine and tip it up while jiggling the fuel line coming from the tank in order to fill the filter up again.
I have taken the fuel line off of the carb and held it downwards and fuel freely runs through all the lines and the filter.
Any advice you have would be appreciated, I have been totally stumped.

You haven't said whether this tractor has a fuel pump...I need to know that as well.  However, without that information I can only guess that something is causing the float to stick closed or hang up partially in the carb and not allow fuel into the float bowl.  Let me know what you find and whether this machine has a fuel pump.

There is no fuel pump. It is gravity fed from the tank.

Answer
Because you said it will flow freely through the lines when disconnected, it's not likely a tank vent issue.  It has to be a problem with the float hanging up and not allowing fuel into the carb or, sometimes, these carbs have a screen filter inside the fitting to the carb that may be clogged.  You should be able to remove the float bowl and allow the float to hang down and you should have fuel flowing freely.  If not, it is one of the problems I mentioned.  Hope this helps.
