Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): lawnmower repair, safety feature, clutch

Question
While mowing with my Honda self propelled push mower (HRA214 and about 14 years old), I smelled an odor similar to burning plastic. When I released the "blade release" handle, the blade kept turning. I noticed a burned spot on the grass where I had stopped for a moment. The mower still cuts fine, but the blade will not stop turning. And it seems a little harder to pullstart, I guess because the blade is engaged? What does this sound like and is it worth fixing? Am I doing harm by using it as is? Thanks, JOE FEDERICO

Answer
Hi Joe,

It sounds like the blade clutch or cable has failed.  From an operation point, the mower should be fine as is.  If you want to keep the safety feature, you will need to disassemble the area and look for something worn or broken.
The burnt grass may have been from the exhaust, if it exits under the deck.

Let me know how you make out, if you decide to repair it.
