Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): lawnmower repair, clutch, blade

Question
While mowing with my Honda self propelled push mower (HRA214 and about 14 years old), I smelled an odor similar to burning plastic. When I released the "blade release" handle, the blade kept turning. I noticed a burned spot on the grass where I had stopped for a moment. The mower still cuts fine, but the blade will not stop turning. And it seems a little harder to pullstart, I guess because the blade is engaged? What does this sound like and is it worth fixing? Am I doing harm by using it as is? Thanks, JOE FEDERICO

Answer
I bet the blade brake clutch is fried.  As for fixing it, I would price a new blade brake clutch...I'm not sure how much the Honda's part cost, but the Kawasaki blade brake clutch is about $150.00.

I would price the part, then price a new mower.  If the part exceeds 30-50% of a new mowers price, then I would opt for a new mower.

Let me know what you find...I'm interested to know how much the clutch cost.
