I have an American yard products model A112ZA 3.75 HP push mower. When I pull the cord to start the mower the engine is not turning which is to say the peice the reel is connected to turns but that turn is not being transfered to the blade. Therefore the mower will not start. I have taken the top off the mower but cannot remove the top peice without a wheel puller. Is this a repair best left to the pros?

Do you have a Briggs engine or a Tecumseh engine?

Many times the starter pawls, the little pieces that engage the starter cup, rust and just need a little WD-40 to free them up.

Let me know.
Eric

I have a Briggs. Where would the pawls be located?

Check out the link...does your starter resemble this one?

If so, number 6 are the pawls, use a small screw driver to gently pry on the pawls and some WD-40 to loosen them.

Let me know if this isn't your starter.
Eric

No. This is not my starter. I have a Briggs motor. Do you have a diagram of mine?

Do you have what appears to be a 3/4 inch square top starter clutch that the starter pulley goes into?

Just trying to figure out which starter you have.

Let me know.
Eric

YES.
Answer -
The starter clutch balls are sticking to the outside of the starter clutch.

Easy fix...replace the starter clutch.  Is your starter clutch metal or plastic?
Eric

Metal

Answer
It needs to be replaced.  Briggs sells a special tool to remove and install the starter clutch; it threads on like a normal nut.

I would also check the starter pulley, make sure the inside, where the clutch fits into, is not rounded out.

Let me know if you have any other questions.
