Hi Carolyn,

Does it crank over or do you get nothing, when you turn the key?

Answer
Hi Carolyn,

A grinding noise would point at the starter or its' gears.  It may be bound up and not turning but you should get some noise somewhere.
If you get nothing when you turn the key, you will need to trace the power path with a test light or meter.  Begin at the starter and follow through to the battery.  The path also goes through the ignition switch and usually 1 or 2 safety switches.

Let me know what you find.

Michael
