Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): B&S Carb. Problem, push mower, walbro

Question
I was recently given a push mower that had been sitting in a storage shed for about 7 or 8 years. When I got it home I immediately changed the oil and plug and also replaced dry rotted fuel and primer lines. The fuel tank was empty(evaporated I think!),so I added some. Fuel started streaming out of the primer bulb and I was told that I needed to clean the carb and install a new carb kit, which I did. This stopped the primer bulb leak but, the engine still won't fire up! I can get it to run for a few seconds by putting some gas into the carb but, I don't have any fuel coming into the primer line or out of the main port in the carb. The float seems to be working fine also. This is my first time trying to repair a small engine ( Only way to learn is to do it!) and I really enjoy it so far.My questions are should I try cleaning it again maybe even soaking it in something? And could you give me any tips on proper ways to clean a carb? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks, Jerry L.

P.S. The carburetor is made by Walbro and is on a 4hp B&S Quantum engine.

Answer
Hi Jerry,

You are on the right track.  Fuel is most likely not flowing though the carb.  The carb still has dirt, debris or gummed fuel inside.  You will need to reclean it, including all the small internal openings and blow it out with compressed air.  Missing even one opening will result in problems.  Use a small wire for openings if needed.  I have had to re-do some carbs a few times to get a missed spot.

Let me know how you make out.
