Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): 5hp briggs on go kart, float bowl, spark plug

Engine will start but not keep running. When it does run, it appears to be running very rich. Air adj screw has no change when screwing in or out. Engine had been garaged for several years.Spark plug has been changed, good spark when rolling over.

Hi Ron,

On some engines there are 2 mixture screws.  The larger high speed screw, usually located on the bottom of the carb, in the center of the float bowl and the low speed screw, on the side of the carb.  Did you try both, if equipped?

If it is getting too much fuel, the plug would be wet after it stalls.  If it is dry, the carb may not be delivering enough fuel.  Try squirting fuel or starting fluid into the carb intake to see if it stays running.
