Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Lawn mower, electrode, cranks

Question
Hi Michael,

I purchased a used lawn mower. It will start right up but will only stay on for a short time. Can you tell what the reason might be for that?  The brand is Clawson and it uses gasoline to operate.

Thank you.

Answer
Hi Ellice,

It is either a lack of spark or a lack of fuel to the engine.
Right after it quits, check the spark at the spark plug's electrode. (Remove the plug, reconnect the wire, lay it against the engine head and watch the electrode while someone cranks the engine over with the safety handle depressed.)  If spark is good, re-install the plug and wire, then try to start while squirting fuel or starting fluid into the carb intake. If it starts and you can keep it running, then the carb most likely has dirt, debris, gummed fuel or water inside. You will need to remove the carb, disassemble it, clean all the small internal openings and blow it out with compressed air.

Let me know how you make out.
Michael
