Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): old Briggs 10hp no start, old briggs, cast iron engine

Question
I recently converted my 10hp horizontal briggs (on '65 Simplicity Landlord 101) from points to electronic ignition.  The engine that I had in the tractor after I did this conversion ran OK but had a problem with rings and was smoking a little bit.  I took it apart and discovered a gouge in the cylinder wall that was obviously the cause of the oil getting by.  I had a spare engine so I put all the new ignition parts and other stuff on that engine (exactly the same) and basically swapped engines.  I put everything back together (brand new carb) and tried to start the new engine.  No luck.  It is a starter generator setup and it turns the engine over very well.  When I remove the plug and ground it to the top of engine it has good spark.  I also tested the spark with a tester and it seems A-OK.  I also went over the replacement engine and cleaned everything out so I know that the valves and cylinder are OK.  When I tried to start the swapped engine, I gave it a shot of starting fluid in the plug hole and it fired briefly and then stopped and won't fire at all now even with the starting fluid yet it still has spark.  My question is about the timing.  Is it possible that the timing can be off and if so, what is the proper way to set these up?  Where the magnetron mounts above the flywheel, there are four small bolts that hold it in place, and it looks like it can be adjusted there, but I'm not sure how or what the proper adjustment is.  I put it in the exact same place as it was when I took it apart but I have a feeling that I have some sort of timing problem.  Any help is appreciated.  Please e-mail any answer you might have to pabuckrub@yahoo.com  Thanks!

Answer
Dave,I believe this is a cast iron engine and the date to be approx a '65. If this is so, the problem is the flywheel's magnet polarity. Engines with points had a flywheel with a N-S-N polarity, engines EQUIPPED with electronic have a S-N-S on the FW's magnets.I suggest to get a later (used/scrapped ) FW that was used with the electronic Ign, put the points back on, or get the flywheel re-polorized (not easy-need a special machine) We used to do the many years ago at Briggs, but fewer and fewer need to do this. I think I have a flywheel I can sell you...E-mail me at kkapsy@wi.rr.com.......Bob
