Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Lawn Mower wont start, blue spark, push mower

Question
I pulled out my 20" push mower for the first time this year and not suprizingly, it won't start.  I have replaced the air filter, spark plug, and emptied the fuel tank and refilled it with fresh gas.  Still no luck.  I'm wondering if there is no spark....how can I check if the spark plug is acually firing?

Answer
Hi Keith,

Check spark by removing the spark plug, reconnecting the wire and laying it against the engine head.  Turn the engine over and watch the plug's electrode for good, blue spark.  If you have spark, I would suspect a lack of fuel flow.  To test for this, squirt fuel or starting fluid into the carb intake.  If it runs, then there is probably dirt, debris or gummed fuel in the carb.  You will need to remove it, disassemble and clean the inside, including all the small openings.  Finally, blow it our with compressed air.

Let me know how you make out.
