Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): MTD 5 hp 21 cut, push mower. ( 1998 model), push mower, flywheel

Question
While cutting the grass, the mower started vibrating and making a lot of clatter real bad.  I shut it off and noticed the blade was very loose.  I tightened the blade back on good and straight and snug.  Now it won't start and it seems like it does not have as much compression as before. Is this all she wrote for my MTD?

Thanks,
Lindsay

Answer
Hi Lindsay,

I would suspect a sheared flywheel key.  You would need to remove the recoil assembly and the flywheel.  The flywheel requires a special tool.  A repair shop should charge about an hour of labor for the job.  If you are a serious do-it-yourselfer you could try it but it is a little involved.

Let me know how you make out or if you need more info.
