Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): lawn mower, honda mower, carbeurator

Question
I think I put too much oil in my Honda mower- it smoked
and then quit. I emptied all the oil and replaced it to the
right amount but still won't start. I looked in the manual- it
states that too much oil may block the filters and affect the
carbeurator. Also the spark may get wet. I cleaned both
filters as best I could- they do not look great- and dried
the exposed portion of the spark  (I could not get it out). Is
my mower dead or will it be OK? I would appreciate any
advice- Thanks Mike

Answer
Hi Mike,

Try to remove the spark plug, using a deep socket wrench.  The threads are normal, right hand.  If the electrode is oil soaked, you can try to clean it with a solvent and blow it dry or replace it.  Were the filters oil soaked or just dirty?
If the oil level was okay to begin with and none of this helps, then you might have another problem like a bad valve or piston.  In that case you will need to do or have done, a compression test.

Let me know what you find,
Michael
