Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): B&G specs, 8hp briggs and stratton, briggs and stratton

Question
1970's 8HP briggs and stratton. It has been 5 or more years since it was running, probably closer to 8. When it was running last I believe that it just wouldn't start one day. But that was a long time ago, cant say for sure. Trying to get it running for my kids to rip on(lawn tractor). I am looking for carb settings (bowl, and top screw), It is getting spark and has good compression. Dumped fuel in carb, and would fire on that, but didn't run. So carb, but as I kept messin with it, it got to the point where it wouldn't even fire. I am getting Spark, but from time to time it seems to diminish a bit and then a few pulls later it is sparkin like crazy, how exactly do you gap the magneto/coil? I remember hearing with a matchbook is a close setting, or no that was points. Anyways I set it so it was as close as possible without rubbing. Is that right? Well that may be enough for now.

Answer
Hi Brad,

Sorry for the delay.  My ISP was down.

The coil gap is set at .006 -.010.
Carb settings are: Larger high speed mixture screw = 1 & 1/2 turns out.  Smaller, low speed mixture screw = 3/4 turn out.
If it runs when fuel is added, I suspect a carb problem, especially if it has been sitting for a while.  Dirt, debris or gummed up old fuel.
I would remove the carb, disassemble, clean the small openings and blow it out with compressed air.

Let me know how you make out.
Michael
