Hi Michael,
My mover won't start. I took the covers off and found the choke being held open by a spring. A linkage connected to the engine block is not pulling the choke closed. there is not a manual choke but there is a manual throttle. I appreciate you taking the time to answer this.
Many thanks, and Happy Easter,
Bob

Hi Bob,

I suspect a broken and missing spring or linkage rod that operated the choke.  It's been a while since I have looked closely at a Briggs linkage setup so I can't point you at the exact part.  Look at the components and see if there are holes that have shiny worn spots, where something would have attached.

Let me know how you make out.
Michael

HI Michael,
I took your advise and did not find any hints of broken linkage and read some books in the library about similar engines. There is no choke on this carb, just the throttle plate. The linkage that I described is for a govenor so I left it alone. I replaced the spark plug and sprayed starter fluid in the carb and got it to start but I can only start it using the starter fluid. Does this mean the carb is varnished up? Can saoking it in carb cleaner work?
Thanks,
Bob

Answer
Hi Bob,

Your research is a help.  If it runs with added fuel but not on its own, then there is a fuel flow problem.  The carb probably is gummed up or has some dirt or debris in it.  You will need to remove the carb, disasemble, clean all the small openings and blow it out with compressed air.  Make a note of the linkage attachment points and watch for any o-rings or seals inside the carb.

Keep me posted and good luck,
Michael
