Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Cam gear placement on VTWIN Honda, kick in the groin, cam gears

Question
Cletus,

I know your area of expertise is in TORO, but I am hoping you can help with my HONDA question. I am rebuilding a 20hp vtwin honda vertical shaft motor for my riding mower. The motor is an OHV design and uses gears rather than a chain to drive the cams. There are no marks on either the cam gears or crankshaft output gears to tell me the position of the valves with #1 at TDC. I have consulted a repair manual about it with no luck.

Also, how do I lash the valves in this one? I have found that one has a clearance of 1/1000 while the other is 1/500 so I know one of the two is off.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Answer
So your question was How do I lash the valves?  Well Mason lets consult the expert on this one.  Cletus are you around?  Yes I am here Cletus.  Ok lets get started.  You need to go pickup a manual called common sense.  It was written by Thomas Paine or somebody and that should help you most of the way with this project.  Why don't you change the clearance on one at a time and see what happens?  Change the 1/1000 to 1/500 and vice versa.  God I'm good.  What do you think about that Eric?  Sorry Mason, have to give the other expert Eric a kick in the groin every chance I get.  He knows nothing.  I am the expert!!!!!
