Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Craftsman lawn tractor shifting problem, craftsman lawn tractor, craftsman model

Question
I have an older Craftsman Model No. 917.25200 lawn tractor with transaxle no. 4360-79 and have had problems shifting gears. I have adjusted the linkage according to the manual and that worked for a while but now it will shift but will not move. The transaxle pulley is under the battery compartment and is rusted and in bad condition. How do I remove this pulley. I removed the retainer ring but the pulley will not come off. How do I remove this pulley? I want to check the shifter assembly and gears. Do you have any suggestions and can you recommend any manuals that would help me. I would appreciate any help or information you can give me.

Answer
Hi Pat,

First make sure that there isn't a set screw in the hub or bottom of the vee.  You could try soaking the pulley's bore and the shaft with penetrating oil.  Heating rusted parts with a torch work well if you can access the area safely.  I don't know of any manuals that would help.  Transaxles are costly to replace and it might not be worth it with an older tractor but it doesn't hurt to take a look first.  Maybe you will find a minor problem.

Good Luck,
Michael
