Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): oil out of carbirator, gray smoke, car trunk

Question
I was just given a fairly new sears lawnmower, with a B&S 6.5 hp . When starting it the first time it blew alot of gray smoke out the exhaust.I didn't use it just ran 2 minutes. The next day there was a lot of oil on the gound,it seems to be leaking out the air filter(from the carb. ?)

Answer
I would check the oil level first.

Second, the only way oil gets in the air filter is if the engine it over-filled with oil, or the mower was tilted too much during transport.

Has the mower been tranported in a car trunk?
Does the oil smell like gasoline?
Make sure you check the air filter; it may need replacing.

Let me know about the oil.
