I was given a Craftsman II 38in. cut riding mower by my dad when mine suddenly expired. The mower had been given to him because the original owner couldn't get it to work.  The mower runs and drives perfectly but when you engage the attachment switch for the blades the mower cuts of. The clutch seems to engage fine as long as the mower isn't running. Can you help?
Answer -
Does the mower have an electric blade engine clutch?

You can tell by looking at the engine pulley.  An electic clutch will have a couple of wires connected to it.

Let me know.

It has an electric clutch and seems to work properly. When the mower is running, and I flip the switch to engage the clutch it shuts the engine down.

Answer
Either something is binding on the deck or there is a bad safety switch.

Remove the belt from the clutch pulley to isolate the blades and other parts from the engine pulley.  Try to engage the blades.  If the engine stalls with the belt removed, then you probably have a safety switch problem.

Let me know what you find.
