Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): screeching weedwacker, john deere c1200, pawls

Question
When I got my John Deere c1200  weedwacker out, to run it, when I went to start it, it would make a horrible screeching noise. It sat all winter. I don't know if there is gunk in it or what. It was coming from the pull string area, I don't think it is the pull string. I bought it in 2003.

Answer
The screeching indicates the starter pawls are not releasing the starter pulley completely when the engine is running.  You will need to remove the starter housing and make sure the pawls move freely and the springs are in good shape.  Hope this helps.
