Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Chainsaw clutch cover problem, wood chip, forward position

Question
Hi Mark,
I have a Husqvarna 51 chainsaw. It has a clutch cover with a built in chain brake. The chain was gummed up so I took off the clutch cover to clean. My problem is that I can't seem to get the cover back on because the front hand guard is stuck in the forward position causing the tightning ring underneath not to fit. I can't get the hand guard to the unlocked position. Am I doing something wrong or do I have to take the whole thing apart. Any advice would be appreciated.
 Thanks, Adam

Answer
You should be able to unlock the chain brake.  It may be difficult with the side cover off the saw but you should be able to.  Make sure there is nothing stuck in the mechanism for the brake (wood chip, etc) that is making it impossible to disengage.  I can't think of anything else unless part of the mechanism has gone "over-centre" and needs a little pry to "over-centre" it back.  If all else fails, take it to a dealer and they will likely be able to unlock it no charge.  Hope this helps.
