Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): spark on 1991 elan, stator coil, chassis wiring

Question
my question is about my 1991 ski-doo elan i was cruising happily on it and it just died all of the sudden on me,i towed it back home and found no spark at the spark plug , i tried new plugs, new spark plug wire and a new coil but it still does'nt have spark, also the old coil has melt marks on one of the posts(closest to engine) could this mean i have to replace the whole generating coil? that is quite expensive, or do i need new points and condensor?  by the way this is a type 247 rotax single cylinder engine.
any help is greatly apprechiated ,thank you
,David

Answer
The first thing I recommend is that you disconnect the main harness connector on the engine to separate it from the chassis wiring.  Remove and ground the spark plug and check for spark again.  If you have spark, the problem is in the circuit to the ignition switch.  If you still have no spark, the problem is within the ignition system itself.  You should also make sure there are no wires pinched or burnt going in towards the stator coil under the flywheel on the engine.  Something grounded here can cause the same issue as a faulty ignition switch circuit.  Being this a 1991, it should be an electronic ignition rather than points.  You will need to contact your Ski-Doo so you can find out the test procedure (voltages and resistances) to properly check the trigger coil and primary ignition windings and their outputs.  If you are not comfortable diagnosing this with a multimeter, they can do it for you and you can replace the parts to save some money.  I hate to tell you, but, often times the parts aren't cheap...but then again, it's not likely you would achieve 13 years of trouble-free service from a points ignition!  Hope this helps.
