Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Snowblower 1996 MTD selfpropelled wont start, plug hole, fuel flow

Question
My 1996 MTD 8 hp 26" (model #317E640F00) self-propelled (plug in to start) snowblower won't start. We've taken the tank off and checked the gas line, it's clear, but it still seems to not get any gas. It looks like the spark/spark plug is okay. I started it a month ago with the gas in it in prep. for winter and now it just cranks and cranks. There is sufficient oil. What do we do next?

Answer
Hi Sue & Bill,

Make sure you don't have water in the tank or carb float bowl.

If you have spark, I would suspect a lack of fuel flow to the carb.  Confirm this by squirting some fuel or carb  cleaner in the carb or spark plug hole and trying to start.  You will then need to remove, disassemble, clean and blow out the carb.

Let me know how you make out.
