Snowmobile Repair: 1984 Polaris 340 twin-star, comet clutch, polaris 340

Question
this sled starts and runs good but it seems to loose power after it gets warm and you need to wind it out before it will take off. Do you believe that it might be a wrong size belt, or could it be the clutch not adjusted. Or a combination of both. Also it will make a loud sqwealing noise, believed from the belt when idling.

Answer
Hello Mike,

There are quite a few things that can cause this problem, but it sounds like you are on the right track. If the engine was removed recently, then you may want to check that the two clutches offset is OK. Also, remove the belt and inspect it. If it is worn on one side, then you need to check the offset the clutches. Other than that, try installing a new belt from your dealer, to see if this helps. Also, try a new set of spark plugs, as they may be fouled. Also, if it is fan cooled, you may want to check the fan belt, it can make alot of squealing. Also, try some Comet Clutch cleaner on the clutches. Let me know if you need any help! Good luck with the sled! --Arcticatman
