Snowmobile Repair: Ski-doo Repair, bombardier rotax, blue marble

Question
Hi, my question is in regards to a 1994 Ski-doo Formula Z 580.The problem i have is that the machine tends smoke alot all the time especially when sitting for a long period of time it does not seem to let up much after a good run, seems as though it is getting to much oil, although I don't know too much about sleds. The plugs seem to be saturated with oil if that helps and it still runs well with lots of power considering above. Any suggestions would be great or if you need more info please reply.Thanx

Answer
Hello Rick,

Welcome to snowmobiling! The 580 motor is bullet proof, so you bought a good sled for sure. The type of oil you use will greatly affect the amount of smoke you see coming from the sled. the only 2 oils I would recommend using in a Ski-Doo are Amsoil or Ski-doo oil (Bombardier -Rotax) . Any other oil, and you will be seeing quite a large amount of smoke. Other oils that cost much more such as Blue Marble and Maxima probably work well, also. As far as making sure the oil pump is work properly, here are the guide lines. On the oil pump (small box with cable going from throttle into pump), there is a rounded plate that the cable connects to. on this plate is a small mark. On the pump there is also a mark. They should line up. If they do not, adjust them until they do. Some Ski Doo's do not have markings, and you will need to take the sled to a dealers to have the pump checked. I hope I have helped you. Let me know if you have any other questions. Good luck with the sled! --Arcticatman
