Snowmobile Repair: Starter rope, starter rope, retaining rings

Question
I pulled the rope right out of my 02 mxz.  It didn't feel like it broke, just pulled out.  How tough is this to fix?

Thanks

Answer
Hello Mark,

Sounds like the knot in the rope gave out on the end. You will need to start with removing the 4 small bolts the retain the starter housing on the sled. Next, pull the entire starter assembly off of the sled. from that point on, remove any retaining rings on the sled and install a new rope. Here is a diagram for a reference: http://216.37.204.202/Skidoo_OEM/Skidoo.asp?Type=13&A=454&B=38  .  Your best bet would be to just take the removed starter assembly to your dealers for rope replacement, as it may need new palls and a spring. I hope this helps you. Let me know if you have any other questions. Good luck with the sled! --Arcticatman
