Snowmobile Repair: Polaris, polaris rxl 650, plug holes

Question
I have a 1993 Polaris RXL 650 and it will not run I think it may be electrical but I am not positive.  Any ideas on what to check or do?
Thank you

Answer
Hello Andy,

Hard to tell sometimes, but a few basic checks will tell you what is wrong. Start with removing all of the spark plugs. Then, take new NGK BR9ES and plug them into the spark plug caps. Now, turn the key switch and kill to the run position. Ground all of the plugs on the top of the engine where there is bare metal. Have a helper crank the engine over sharply. All of the plugs should spark with bright blue sparks. If the sparks are yellow-orange, or they don't spark at all, you have an electrical problem. If they do spark, pour a little gas into the plug holes ( about a teaspoon ). Re-install the plugs, and crank the engine over. If it starts and then stalls, you have a fuel delivery problem. Basically you are looking at installing a new fuel filter and cleaning the carbs. If you can't get any spark, or the sparks are yellow, you will need a new coil and possibly CDI. Let me know what happens and I will be more than happy to help you get it going. Good luck! --Arcticatman
