i beleive this model to be a 340! i would like to know the settings for the carb. (gas and air mix) thank you for your time and effort. fjp

Hello Fred,

Yes, that would be a 340, as it's a 1988. Sometimes your sled is referred to as a Excel III. For the carb, there is only one screw that controls the mixture, and unlike most sleds, it an air screw, meaning in controls the amount of air allowed into the fuel/air mixture. to adjust it, screw it all the way out and take a look at the tip to make sure it isn't bent or distorted. If it looks ok, re-install it, just until it stops, don't force it. Now, back it out 1 turn. This is where to start. After letting the sled warm up for 4-5 mins, try moving it in and out in small increments. Each time you give it a small turn, wait a second for the engine to respond. Keep in mind, that with an air screw, turning it out, makes the mixture leaner, and turning it in will make it richer. If you can't seem to get any results from adjusting it, you will need to clean the carb. Remove the carb, and then take off the float bowl on the bottom. After doing so, clean all of the internal parts, paying special attention to the inlet needle and seat, and also the main jet. make sure the float moves freely and doesn't stick. If you need parts for it, www.mfgsupply or www.denniskirk.com should have a few, as well as www.alssnowmo.com , www.royaldistributing.com , and even Ebay Motors. hope this helps you out. Let me know if you have any other questions, and I'll be more than happy to answer them. Good luck with the Yamaha! --Arcticatman

Answer
Hello Fred,

Sorry for the delay in my response. Congrats on successfully getting the Yamaha going! On my Mach, there is a primer, and it works very well on a cold morning. You can purchase a universal primer through Dennis Kirk here, but this type of primer requires purchasing brass inlets to put in the carb or manifold or a flange designed for their use: http://www.denniskirk.com/jsp/product_catalog/Product.jsp;jsessionid=22520Q0MX4K   .   If you want a basic repair to the problem, this primer would work well;http://www.denniskirk.com/jsp/product_catalog/Product.jsp;jsessionid=22520Q0MX4K  .  That primer splices into the fuel lines, and is a sinch to install. However, all that it does, is provide pressure to the fuel system. It does not squirt raw fuel into the carbs as does the primer I initially provided a link for. I prefer the in-dash plunger primer over the squeeze bulb primer. Something you could do, is drill a small hole in the air box, near to the carb, at an angle. This way, you could insert the hose from the primer at an angle so that it would point in towards the carburetor.Just be sure to put some sealant around where the hold would be. These are just suggestions. Hope I have helped you. Let me know if you have any other questions. Good luck with the sled! --Arcticatman
