Snowmobile Repair: crank seals?, small plastic container, little tank

Question
hey,
i have a 2001 mxzx 440 race sled, which runs on mixed gas.  this means that it has a small plastic container which holds motor oil and drains down into the crank i think, but i am not sure. i would like to know what this thing is, if you do, and also i have a problem.  this little container continually drains in about 3 minutes of riding.  it started out draining when the sled wasn't even running, and now it only drains when i ride and reach high rpm.  someone told me it might be crank seals, but i don't know.  i am not sure where the oil is going, and what that means.  thanks for your time.

Answer
Hello Drew,

The little tank you are seeing ( here is a link http://216.37.204.202/Skidoo_OEM/Skidoo.asp?Type=13&A=398&B=4    )  , is a tank that helps lubricate the bearings, and was installed by Ski-Doo. It is necessary, as the sled is a pre-mix, and needs the extra oil. If you ever let it run dry, it will easily destroy your engine, as the combination of air getting in the engine, and the lack of oil will cause the bearings and seals to get overheated, as well as other parts. The little tank is powered up by a pump in the water pump. Be sure to use Ski-Doo injector oil, or a suitable equivalent that is 2 cycle injector oil. It sounds like it is using oil pretty fast. It would be wise to take it to the dealer to have it serviced, as working on these are not wise. Hope this helps you out! Let me know if I can answer any other questions you might have! Good luck with the Doo! --Arcticatman
