Snowmobile Repair: 1998 vmax 600 oil pump, yamaha sleds, rotating shaft

Question
I have a leak at the bottom of the pump, but it is not the hose as I replaced it and the clamp (inlet). So I suspected it could be the metal stub on which the hose connects, thinking it was pressed, into the body. So i pulled the pump off the drive and de greased it and checked it but could not find a loose fitting. Next I took the cover/cable support off the pump and found it was fit with an o ring which may have been the leak source, and I set the 0 ring back in the groove and added some hi temo rtv tto help it seal. My question is I'm nott sure I put the cover/cable support back on right. It has a small tab that I suspect retains the rotating shaft inside but when you look in the pump theres a notch in the shaft that turns when you pull the cable and vary the flow. Did the tab on the cover have to fit in the notch on the shaft or was the tab just a retainer as it seems. I havent bled the pump or attempted to start everything back up till I knpow for sure. The leak was more of a nuisance/mess than a chance of not getting oil to the motor. sorry about beeing lengthy I hope the info helps and I await your answer ty/rjm I could fax a drawing of what it looks like inside but I suspect you have a microfich

Answer
Hello Russ,

First off, thanks for explaining in detail, no question is too lenghthy! I don't know much about the newer Yamaha sleds. From what I can tell, it is just a retainer, but I don't want to take a chance with that. I have asked a few Yamaha guys to let me know the answer, but I can't say when they will answer. My recomendation, is to take the pump to any dealer and ask them, or just ask with out the pump, if that would be easier. I really wish I could have helped you. Best of luck to you with the sled, hope you are able to get it running properly! --Arcticatman
