Snowmobile Repair: 85 Arcticat Jag 440 Keeps stalling, ngk br8es, carburetor adjustment

Question
I have a 85 Jag 440 that has had the carb taken apart and soaked in cab solvent cleaner because of varnish or green carb snydrome. The sled will start great but after 1-2 minutes will start to stall. If I hit the primer button it will smooth out or feather the throttle a little. If I just let it run it will stall out. I have also rebuilt the fuel pump changed plugs with new ones and checked compression 120 PSI both cylinders. I also checked suction line to fuel pump 10 inches vacuum really bounced around while reading 0 to 10 inches very quickly. I replaced fuel filter also. My next step is to replace plug wires and ignition coil and brain box for ignition. Any suggestions? Thanks for your help.

Answer
Hello Mike,

I think there are a few things you could do to correct the problem. If the sled simply isn't idling fast enough, there is a screw on the carb, a big on, that points streight out, from about the middle of the side of the carb. Try turnning it in, until a satisfactory speed is reached. Also, it might need a plug with a hotter heat range, in which I would recomend a NGK BR8ES, I think that would really help. Also, if your crank seals are going, this could happen. Check the rubber flange, that mounts the carb to the engine for cracks, too. A good, careful carburetor adjustment is always worth a try. Best of luck to you with the CAT, let me know if I can help you at all. Got to get it going, before the snow hits! --Arcticatman
