Snowmobile Repair: snowmobile repair, air screw, fuel mixture

Question
I have a 1980 500cc EVEREST. It has sat for about 4 years inside the shop because it took me a while to find a new suspension for it . I ran the sled a couple times in those 4 years.  Last winter I finally repaired the suspension and was ready to ride, but it won't run properly.

When I start the sled I need to prime it a lot and when it does start it will only run if I continuosly prime it or else it will bogg.  I have replaced the fuel pump and put all new gas lines in it. We thought it might be the crank seal but it turns out its not. The carburator has been cleand also. I have no idea what to do . The only other thing that I can think is that the carburator is not set properly and I have no idea what the proper settings are.

any info would be greatly appreciated. thank you

Answer
Hello Jim,

Sorry I couldn't help you sooner! It sounds like the sled either needs the carb adjusted, or it is fouling the plugs, due to a weak ignition or improperly adjusted carb. I wouls start with new NGK BR7ES spark plugs. I know that year Everest had a CDI ignition, so it is pretty reliable. The Everest used a Mikuni VM slide type carburetor, which only has one mixture adjusting screw and one idle speed screw. The idle speed screw is the very large screw, that is on the side of the carb. Next to it, is a small screw that is in the side of the carb also, but at an angle. It is an AIR screw, so it works the oposite as a fuel mixture screw. When you turn the screw in, clockwise it will richen the mixture of the carb, by cutting off the amount of air in the fuel/air mix. Start with turning it all the way in. until it just seats it's self. Then, turn it out, counterclockwise 1 and 1/4 turns. start the snowmobile, and then turn it out in 1/4 increments, and listen to the engine, if it gets worse, turn it in, and get it right where it runs like it should. I hope this helps you, and let me know if you have any other questions that I can help out with! Good luck with the Doo! --Arcticatman
