Snowmobile Repair: Snowmobile doesnt work, antifreeze leak, generic question

Question
Sorry for the generic question.  I have a 1996 AC 600 i believe ext.  the hood was trashed and replaced with a lexan hood so im not sure of the exact model.  It is the 3 cyl though.

Basically, it has sat for a couple years and now wont start.  I'm quite mechanically apt, but have never worked on a sled.

Before it sat, it ran fine.  started in 1-2 pulls, ran well.  only had a minor antifreeze leak, which im going to try and track down.

Where should i start to get this beast running again?  I was planning on replacing plugs and wires, pulling the carbs and rebuilding those. When i put it away, i topped the gas off and added some fuel stabilizer.  should i pull the gas tank and get the old gas out also?

Thanks!

Answer
Hello Marc,

Sorry I couldn't answer your question sooner! It looks like you have a good plan. Repalcing the plugs is a good place to start, the proper plugs for that sled can be found on www.ngksparkplugs.com Rebuilding the carbs should help too, www.denniskirk.com or www.mfgsupply.com will have the rebuild kits. Unless the gas is real old, or smells old, I wouldn't worry about it too much. the sled is probably a ZR or ZRT with the tripple motor. I would actually check for spark on all the plugs, when you replace them to make sure there isn't a problem there. After cranking awhile, take the plugs out and see if they are wet, they should be. If they are dry, then the sled has a fuel delivery problem. On most sleds that have sat for some time, the inlet needle almost always sticks and will cause problems. The thing is, in most rebuild kits, the new inlet needle and seat don't fit just right. I would clean the inlets and seats as good as possible, and re-use them. I hope this helps you. Let me know if I can help you out at all! Good luck with the Cat! -- Arcticatman
